Pulp Helden - THE SPIDER

1933 erschuf HARRY STEEGER von POPULAR PRODUCTIONS den Verbrechensbekämpfer THE SPIDER als Konkurrenz zur erfolgreichen Pulp-Serie THE SHADOW.
Am 1. Oktober 1933 erschien mit THE SPIDER STRIKES die erste Ausgabe der neuen Pulp-Serie. Autor dieser Erzählung war der Autor R. T. M. SCOTT, der mit THE WHEEL OF DEATH auch die Erzählung zur zweiten Ausgabe von THE SPIDER schrieb. Ab der dritten Ausgabe von THE SPIDER übernahm am 1. Dezember 1933 jedoch der Autor NORVELL PAGE mit WINGS OF THE BLACK DEATH als Hauptautor die Serie und löste damit Scott ab, der die Pulp-Serie verließ. Ab Band 3 wurden alle Roman der Serie unter dem Pseudonym GRANT STOCKBRIDGE verfasst.
Hinter THE SPIDER verbirgt sich der Millionär und Playboy Richard Wentworth, der mit Maske, Cape und Hut die Unterwelt von New York mit äußerster Härte bekämpft.
Er und seine Freundin Nita Van Sloan wissen, dass sie nicht heiraten können, denn Wentworth kann jederzeit als THE SPIDER demaskiert oder getötet werden.
Die Helfer von Wentworth sind dessen Diener Ram-Singh, der sehr geschickt mit dem Messer umzugehen weiß, der Chauffeur Jackson sowie der Butler Harold Jenkyns.
Mit der 38. Ausgabe und der Erzählung CITY OF DREADFUL NIGHT gab am 1. November 1936 der Autor EMILE C. TEPPERMANN sein THE SPIDER-Debüt. Danach folgten nach und nach noch die Autoren WAYNE ROGERS, PRENTICE WINCHELL sowie DONALD C. CORMACK, dessen Erzählung SLAUGHTER, INCORPORATED jedoch nicht mehr veröffentlicht wurde, da die Pulp-Serie THE SPIDER mit der 118. Ausgabe am 1. Dezember 1943 eingestellt wurde.
Auch auf der Kinoleinwand führte THE SPIDER in zwei Film-Serials seinen Kampf gegen das Verbrechen. 1938 mit THE SPIDERS WEB und 1941 mit THE SPIDER RETURNS". In beiden Filmen mimte der Schauspieler WARREN HULL die Hauptrolle.
