Wenn man sich mit den Filmen der 60er Jahren beschäftigt, kommt man unweigerlich auch mit der Filmmusik dieser Filme sowie mit der Musik dieser Zeit in Berührung.

Ein Grund, neben den Filmen der 60er Jahre, auch einen intensiveren Blick auf die Musik der 60er Jahre, den "Swinging Sixties", zu werfen.

1965 gelang dem Waliser Tom Jones mit seinem Debüt-Song "IT'S NOT UNUSUAL" der internationale Durchbruch als Sänger.

Das Lied wurde nicht nur ein Nummer-1-Hit in seinem Heimatland England, sondern auch ein Top-Ten-Hit in den USA.

"Am 1. März 1965 erreichte 'It's Not Unusual' die Nummer eins - St. David's Day, Nationalfeiertag in Wales." (1)

Nach den Liedern "ONCE UPON A TIME" (1965), "LITTLE LONELY ONE" (1965) und "WITH THESE HANDS" (1965) gelang Tom Jones 1965 mit "WHAT'S NEW PUSSYCAT?" (1965), dem Titellied aus der gleichnamigen Komödie mit Peter Sellers, Peter O'Toole, Romy Schneider und Woody Allen, ein weiterer Top-Ten-Hit.

1966 wurde das Lied  "WHAT'S NEW PUSSYCAT?" für einen OSCAR in der Kategorie "Bester Song" nominiert.

Im Mai 1965 erschien mit "ALONG CAME JONES" auch das Debüt-Album von Tom Jones. In den USA erschien das Album im Juli 1965 unter dem Titel "IT'S NOT UNUSUAL". 

Hinzu kam ein "GRAMMY AWARD" in der Kategorie "Best New Artist" sowie zwei GRAMMY-Nominierungen für "IT'A NOT UNUSUAL" in der Kategorie "Best Contemporary (R&R) Single" und für "WHAT'S NEW PUSSYCAT?" in der Kategorie " Best Contemporary (R&R) Vocal Performance - Male".

Nach den Alben "WHAT'S NEW PUSSYCAT?" (1965), "A-TOM-IC JONES" (1965) und "FROM THE HEART"  (1966) konnte der Sänger am 24. November 1969 für sein fünftes Album "GREEN, GREEN GRASS OF HOME" eine "GOLDENE SCHALLPLATTE" in den USA in Empfang nehmen.

Aber auch sonst lief das Jahr 1969 für den Sänger Tom Jones ausgezeichnet. Denn auch für seine weiteren Alben erhielt der Sänger in den USA "GOLDENE SCHALLPLATTEN".

Für seine vier Alben "THE TOM JONES FEVER ZONE", "HELP YOURSELF", "THIS IS TOM JONES" und "TOM JONES  - LIVE IN LAS VEGAS" konnte er am am 7. Mai 1969, am 4. Juni 1969, am 3. Juli 1969 und am 27. Oktober 1969 jeweils eine weitere "GOLDENE SCHALLPLATTE" in Empfang nehmen. 

1965 bekam Tom Jones den Auftrag, das Titellied "THUNDERBALL" zum gleichnamigen Bondfilm zu singen, nachdem es Probleme mit dem eigentlich für "FEUERBALL" (1965) geplanten Lied "Mr. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" gegeben hatte, dass eigentlich von Shirley Bassey gesungen werden sollte.

1966 gelang dem Sänger Tom Jones mit seinem Lied "GREEN, GREEN GRASS OF HOME" ein weiterer Nummer-1-Hit in England.

Von 1966 bis 1970 gelangen dem Sänger mit

eine Reihe von Top-Ten-Hits in England sowie mit den beiden Liedern "LOVE ME TONIGHT" und "WITHOUT LOVE" auch zwei Top-Ten-Hits in den USA.

"GREEN, GREEN GRASS OF HOME war der Beginn einer Reihe von Top-Ten-Singles, die sich fast ununterbrochen bis 1970 erstreckte." (2)

Hinzu kam am 3. Oktober 1969 eine "GOLDENE SCHALLPLATTE für das Lied "I'LL NEVER FALL IN LOVEN AGAIN".

Am 18. Februar 1970 konnte Tom Jones nicht nur für seine Single "WITHOUT LOVE" (1969), sondern auch für die Alben "TOM" (am 24. Juli 1970), "I WHO HAVE NOTHING" (am 15. Januar 1971), "SHE'S A LAY" (am 12. Januar 1972) sowie für "TOM JONES LIVE AT CAESARS PALACE" (am 31. März 1972) jeweils eine "GOLDENE SCHALLPLATTE" in den USA in Empfang nehmen.

Im Sommer 1970 startete der Sänger Tom Jones eine Tour durch die USA mit Auftritten im Madison Square Garden in New York, im Forum in Los Angeles und im Cow Palace in Daly City, in der Nähe von San Francisco.

"Zu diesem Zeitpunkt, immer noch vor der Geburt des Stadionrocks, spielten höchstens die Stones oder die Faces in Hallen mit zwölftausend plus x Sitzen wie dem Madison Squar, aber kein Solo-Popsänger. Ich bin ein Pionier." (3)

1971 landete Tom Jones mit "SHE'S A LADY" seinen letzten großen Top-Ten-Hit in den USA, für die er am 25. März 1971 eine "GOLDENE SCHALLPLATTE" erhielt.

"1971 landete ich einen großen Hit mit 'She's a Lady', einem Song, den Paul Anka extra für mich geschrieben hatte.
Er hatte den Text auf die Rückseite eines Trans World Airline-Tickets gekritzelt, irgendwo zwischen New York und London. Die Melodie kam später in anderthalb Stunden am Klavier dazu." (4)

1975 und 1978 konnte der Sänger jeweils eine "GOLDENE SCHALLPLATTE" für das Album "20 GREATEST HITS" sowie für "I'M COMING HOME" in England in Empfang nehmen.

Ab Ende der 70er Jahre blieben jedoch die Hits für Tom Jones weltweit aus. Dafür war er an zweihundert Abenden im Jahr in Live-Shows in den USA zu sehen.

"Als die Siebziger in die Achtziger übergehen, bin ich unterwegs, mache Liveshows wie am Fließband. Okay, der Maßstab ist nicht derselbe wie bei den gigantischen Tourneen ein paar Jahre bzuvor.
Die Fernsehsendung ist vorbei, die Hits sind Vergangenheit, Großbritannien scheint sich nicht nicht im Entferntesten dafür zu interessieren, was ich so mache.
Aber das heißt nicht, dass ich nicht gefragt bin. Bis zu zweihundert Abende im Jahr. Ich schufte wie ein Pferd. Ausverkaufte Hallen in ganz Amerika. Auch in den Achtzigern wollen die Leute noch Tom Jones sehen." (5)

Ende der 80er Jahre gelangen Tom Jones aber mit dem beiden Liedern  "A BOY FROM NOWHERE" (1987 - Platz 2) und "KISS" (1988 - Platz 5) zwei neue Top-Ten-Hits in England.

1999 schafft Jones mit seinem neuen Album RELOAD" ein Comeback. "RELOAD" wurde weltweit, insbesondere in Europa, Australien und Kanada ein Riesenhit.
2000 konnte Tom Jones für sein Album in England 4xPlatin in Empfang nehmen. In Deutschland erreichte das Album Platin und in Kanada Gold. Nur in den USA schien man von dem neuen Album des Sängers keine Kenntnis nehmen zu wollen.

2000 gelang dem Sänger mit dem Lied "SEX BOMB" ein weiterer weltweiter Hit. In Deutschland konnte der Sänger 1999 für die Single eine "Goldene Schallplatte" in Empfang nehmen. Und auch in den USA schaffte das Lied 'immerhin' Platz 11 in den US-Dance-Floor-Charts.

In England gelangen dem Sänger 1999 und 2000 mit "BURNING DOWN THE HOUSE" (Platz 7) und mit "MAMA TOLD ME NOT TO COME" (2000) zwei weitere Top-Ten-Hits.

Mit dem Album "GREATEST HITS" gelang dem Sänger Tom Jones 2003 sogar, erneut eine Platin-Platte in England zu erreichen.

2015 kam mit "LONG LAST SUITCASE" sein bisher letztes Album heraus.
