In den 1960er Jahren hatte Petula Clark insbesondere in ihrer Heimat sowie in Italien und Deutschland einige Top-Ten-Hits. In Ländern wie den USA, Kanada oder Australien war die britische Sängerin allerdings so gut wie unbekannt.
Das änderte sich, als Petula Clark 1964 den Produzenten und Songwriter Tony Hatch kennenlernte, der für sie das Lied "DOWNTOWN" schrieb, mit dem ihr ein weltweiter Hit und der internationale Durchbruch als Sängerin gelang.
Im Dezember 1964 stand die Single auf Platz 2 in England und Clark konnte in ihrer Heimat für "DOWNTOWN" eine "Goldene Schallplatte" in Empfang nehmen, da sich das Lied dort über 500.000 mal in England verkauft hatte.
Im Januar 1965 kletterte die Single "DOWNTOWN" in den USA auf Platz 1 und die Sängerin Petula Clark erhielt für das Lied auch in den USA eine "GOLDENE SCHALLPLATTE" (1. März 1965), da sich die Single dort über eine Million mal verkauft hatte.
Hinzu kamen unter anderem auch Platz 1 - Platzierungen des Liedes in Deutschland, Italien, Kanada und in Australien.

In Deutschland gelang der Sängerin Petula Clark zudem mit dem deutschsprachigen Lied "MONSIEUR" ein weiterer Erfolg, denn die Single erhielt dort eine "GOLDENE SCHALLPLATTE".

Auch sonst war das Jahr 1964 ein gutes Jahr für die britische Sängerin. Petula Clark erhielt einen "Grammy Award" für "DOWNTOWN" in der Kategorie "Best Rock & Roll Recording".
Hinzu kamen Grammy-Nominierungen in den Kategorien "Record of Year", "Best Vocal Performance, Female" und "Best New Artist of 1964".
1965 kam zudem Petula Clarks neues Album "DOWNTOWN" heraus. Hinzu kam, dass die Sängerin 1965 auch einen weiteren "Grammy Award", diesmal in der Kategorie "Best Contemporary (R&R) Vocal Performance - Female" für das Lied "I KNOW A PLACE" gewann, sowie für einen Grammy in der Kategorie "Best Vocal Performance - Female" nominiert wurde.

Nach "DOWNTOWN" und "I KNOW A PLACE" ging die erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit mit Tony Hatch in den 60er Jahren mit Liedern wie "MY LOVE" (1966), Petula Clarks zweiter Nummer 1 - Hit in den USA, "A SIGN OF THE TIMES" (1966), "WHO I AM?" (1966), "I COULDN'T LIVE WITHOUT YOUR LOVE" (1966) und "COLOUR MY WORLD" (1967) weiter.
1967 wurde Petula Clark für das Lied "DON'T SLEEP IN THE SUBWAY" in den Kategorien "Best Vocal Performance - Female", "Best Contemporary Single" und "Best Contemporary Female Solo Vocal Performance" für drei "Grammy Awards" nominiert.

Danach erschienen die Singles "THE CAT IN THE WINDOW" (1967), "THE OTHER MAN'S GRASS" (1967),
"KISS ME GOODBYE" (1968), "DON'T GIVE UP" (1968), "AMERICAN BOYS" (1968), "HAPPY HEART" (1969), "LOOK AT MINE" (1969) und "NO ONE BETTER THAN YOU" (1969) sowie die Alben "THESE ARE MY SONGS" (1967), "THE OTHER MAN'S GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER (1968), "PETULA" (1968), "PETULA CLARK'S GREATEST HITS" (1968), "PORTRAIT OF PETULA" (1969) und "JUST PET" (1969).
Ähnlich wie bei der Musik von Nancy Sinatra, kristallisierten sich bei mir auch bei der Musik von Petula Clark in Gestalt der Lieder "DON'T SLEEP IN THE SUBWAY", "PLEASE DON'T GO", "MUSIC", "MY LOVE IS WARMER THAN THE SUNSHINE", "MY LOVE", "ONE IN A MILLION" und "DON'T GIVE UP" einige Favoriten heraus, die ich persönlich - neben den vielen anderen Liedern von Petula Clark - den Musik-Fans sehr empfehlen kann.
Insbesondere auch denjenigen Fans, die die Musik der "Swinging Sixties" mögen oder die sich mit der Musik dieser Zeit etwas eingehender beschäftigen möchten...
